Sammy was in surgery from approximately 10 am to noon today. The surgeon removed a good-sized piece of the tumor in Sam’s abdomen, a piece of leg bone and bone marrow sample for analysis. Initial report from the hospital’s pathology lab confirms the preliminary diagnosis of neuroblastoma. The tissue samples will be sent to a cooperating research lab for more detailed information, which will guide the chemotherapy regimen. We anticipate that chemotherapy will be initiated on/about Monday of next week, and that Sammy will be released to go home over this coming weekend. The surgeon installed a shunt/portal, through which chemo will be administered.
Margot’s great friend, Colleen, is serving as chief scheduler of volunteer helpers from among family and friends, so we will defer to her (and Marg and Neil).
