Oof! We bounced back into the hospital Tuesday night with an infection. Sam’s white counts were officially zero and that seems to be the day we bounce back every time. He has some stomach pain and is starting to get the same itchy rash we had two chemos ago. He’s not as sick as he was the two times we bounced back before. He feels generally ok until he eats something that doesn’t go so well on his tummy or his rash flares up. His fever only spiked up over 101 once.
We spent yesterday reading a lot of books. We finally finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and discovered some really good books in the playroom library: The Jester Has Lost His Jingle, The Owl Moon and The Magic School Bus Ride Through the Human Body. The Magic School Bus book was great because it showed pictures of all the different types of blood cells which helped Sammy understand what his “counts being low” means. We ordered them all from Amazon.
It’s frustrating to be back in. I started to groan and complain about it yesterday until I ran into two families we’ve become friendly with whose kids are in the ICU. I have since shut my mouth. Sammy is doing fine and will probably be out by Saturday which will give us a full week of good counts before the next chemo.
Neil stayed at the hospital last night with Sam and I stayed and played trash truck and “dive in”(which means jumping from the small book shelf onto the couch) with Andy. Maureen was a huge help as usual and stayed with Andy last night while I went back to the hospital to bring Sammy some things, eat dinner with him (I ate he didn’t) and to drop off our syringes for the shot -the home care needles hurt less than the hospital needles, they are smaller and more pointed. Thanks to Roni for bringing dinner.
