Great news from surgery. The “bump” is gone. The surgeon believes he removed 100% of the visible tumor (there are always the chance of microscopic lymph nodes that weren’t seen). He removed Sam’s left adrenal gland (the origin of the tumor) and the enlarged, tumor-filled lymph nodes around the kidney/adrenal gland. We are VERY HAPPY! Sam is currently in ICU and will spend one night there before transferring to the oncology floor for the rest of his recovery. He has a urinary catheter, epidural for abdominal pain, a nasal tube that goes to his stomach to suck stomach fluids so he doesn’t get nauseated, and a secondary IV for additional pain relief. He awoke briefly, is breathing on his own, and is just looking strong, strong, strong. Margot & I feel blessed – We’re not out of the woods yet since neuroblastoma statistically will relapse within 3 years of diagnosis if it relapses, but we’ve made it this far, and for this, we are very, very thankful. Thanks so much to everyone for the call/emails/prayers & thoughts. Thanks to Deb/Colleen/Elizabeth for watching Andy and for lunch & dinner. We couldn’t do it without you. I’ll write more later but need to put Andy to bed!
With best wishes – Neil
