Sam is not the only brave one in our family. Neil let us shave his head this week and he gave the razor to Sammy and his friend Mimi in turns (what a dad) and then had me finish him off. He was pretty stripey looking when we were finished, not the smooth look he had the last time Manny in the hospital did it for us. He looks great though. Everyone says he looks like Lance Armstrong. We bought him a bike for Father’s Day and Sammy and I coached Andy very carefully all the way home. “We’re not going to tell Daddy about the bike, it’s a big surprise. A surprise means we don’t tell Daddy until Sunday.” He said, “Ok, Mommy, I won’t tell.” We drove around to the garage and snuck the bike in there so Neil wouldn’t have any idea. Then we walked in the door and Andy said, “Daddy, we bought you a bike, it’s a big surprise!” Sammy slapped his forehead but was very excited to go bike riding with his dad.
We’re going into the hospital for round six this week. We check in tomorrow morning. Sammy will have a renal scan to check his kidney function while he’s in and all of the scans and work up they need to do for the stem cell transplant. As much as I ‘m happy we’re on our last round of chemo before stem cell, it means we’re getting closer to the stem cell transplant and I’m terrified of that. We’re taking it one day at a time though and are going to give Sammy a good 5th birthday and as much fun as we can squeeze in before we go.
