August 10, 2005 10th (Day +5)

Dick Van Dyke visited City of Hope yesterday and it was pretty awesome. He brought along three young gentleman and they formed a barbershop quartet that made the pediatric rounds for at least two hours. He sang two songs for Sam: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Chim Chimminy (from Mary Poppins) and it was spot-on. He had the English accent and the facial expressions from the movie – I couldn’t stop smiling all day. I love that movie and another one from that era (My Fair Lady). Are there any little boys that didn’t fall in love with Audrey Hepburn? Anyways, Mr. Van Dyke was beyond gracious and we hope to see him again soon. Sam? He is doing well – he has a little green button to give him a dose of morphine and can request the mouth care team when he wants. They are doing a ton of little things to empower Sam and we’re very pleased to be at City of Hope. I’ll write more tomorrow.
