September 1, 2005 (Day + 27)

Oops – didn’t mean to go a whole week without an update. We are home in San Diego for a week. Sammy’s counts were so good that Dr. Bolotin let us go home until the 6th. It goes without saying that we are extremely happy to be here.

Sammy’s been able to see Mimi, Joe and Arielle. He picked out his Halloween costume yesterday from a catalog. Halloween is his favorite holiday and he asks about it all year. He’s going to be a Power Ranger, though it was a close call between that and a Ninja Turtle. Andrew picked out a Pterodactyl costume and they picked out a Wonder Woman costume for me 😉

I’ve been trying to catch up a bit on work, get things lined up for Sam’s home teacher to come in and about 50 million other things that have gone undone while we’ve been away.

We had the CT scan on Tuesday that will determine whether or not Sammy gets tomotherapy radiation or regular radiation. Sammy did the scan without having to be put to sleep; he didn’t move a muscle despite the fact that the cranky lady who tried to do the scan the first time said he couldn’t do it. He was so patient. There were about ten people in the room and it took them 25 minutes to adjust everything and argue about his position, etc. I figured by the time they did the damn scan he would want to move but he didn’t. I had to stifle the urge to stick my tongue out at the scan lady when we were successful. Tomotherapy is more concentrated and doesn’t leak out to other parts of the body as much so we are hoping we’ll qualify for it. I guess it depends on the dimensions and certain calculations they do from the CT scan. City of Hope has the only machine for tomo in Southern California so our doctor keeps telling us how lucky we are to get it. They are going to radiate the spot on Sammy’s leg as well as the site of the primary tumor in his abdomen. The radiologist at City of Hope thought that the spot on the leg looked to him like bone damage from the active cancer that was there at diagnosis but didn’t think there was any active cancer there now. Great news. Dr. Bolotin is still a bit uneasy about it though and thinks it would be smart to go ahead and radiate the spot. Radiation will start on September 7th and we will finish up on the 22nd.

We’ve been getting bits and pieces of news from my dad about our family in New Orleans. We’ve been thinking about them constantly this week. My grandmother Owie, Aunt Ann, Uncle Don, Clay, Leslie, Julia, Jack, Alice, Cole and Taylor all had to evacuate and are waiting news of whether or not they have homes to go back to. Luckily, they are all safe but much worse for the wear and obviously very worried.

We’ll be back up in LA next week but for now are enjoying San Diego, friends and being together as a family again. Sammy’s eating a bit more but still on TPN at night.
