Blood check was on Monday and all is well. Sammy’s blood work looks great. I was grumbling to myself about driving two hours up and back for a blood check and Sammy was complaining that he didn’t want to go (we stopped at Blockbuster and got him Inspector Gadget to watch on the way up and he was fine) but every time we get up there and see Dr. Bolotin I think to myself, “She is so worth it.” She sits patiently and answers all our questions, whenever we need a copy of a scan or a report we get it the same day and she jokes and plays with Sammy and makes him laugh. Neil wanted copies of our scans from January and we got them on disk that day. This just doesn’t happen anywhere else. She really likes Neil a lot so she said this very kindly, he’s been emailing her questions and requests lately and she said, “We need to keep Neil busy. Is he busy with something else?” It made me laugh. I told her Neil is a busy guy in general (which I think she knows).
We are half way through the first week of accutane. Sammy’s face is getting chapped again but the Aquafor seems to help. He won’t do chapstick and we have to put the Aquafor on in the middle of the night. He’s a champ at taking the pills now though- doesn’t even phase him.
Our new hearing aids come in next week. Now I completely understand (ha ha) why insurance companies consider hearing aids cosmetic. Take a look at these babies (click on blue and red – we ordered one of each): http://www.phonak.com/professional/productsp/instrumentsp/digitalp/savia-intro/saviaoverview-2.htm?activetab=22170
I bet the kids who don’t have hearing loss are going to want to wear them. It’s a good thing we’re going to get them too because as we were driving home from The City of Hope, I was making work calls and handed Sammy back the movie Ice Age to put in the DVD player (I know, multitasking while driving?). I started my phone calls and could hear Sammy laughing in the background, he was probably about 15 minutes into the movie when I got off the phone and then I started listening to the movie and I said, “Uh, buddy, did you know you’re listening to that in Spanish?” “Oh,” he said, “I’m going to change it to English then.” He’s such a sweetie. It makes me realize how much he’s relying on visual to get by.
Sammy’s home teacher came yesterday, the boys played with Samantha in the morning and Arielle in the afternoon, Sammy had karate and both boys did free play at tumbling after Karate. They were wiped out last night. Andrew had school yesterday and drop off sucked as usual but he seemed very happy when I picked him up. He’d had another accident which the teachers don’t take all that kindly to. He’s supposed to be totally potty trained to be in that class. He was actually until he started that class. Hopefully, we’ll get it under control. I’ve started bribing him with Cheetos, his new favorite food in the whole world. I think he was introduced to them at Samantha’s house. Now, please don’t email me to tell me that there isn’t one single natural food product in a Cheeto, I only give him a couple for going potty. Every time I give him a Cheeto he says the same thing, “I like the crunchy Cheetos and Elizabeth likes the spicy Cheetos. It’s getting kind of bad in the grocery and drug store because every time we walk by a Cheetos display Andrew screams out, “Cheetos, Mommy, I love Cheetos!” I can feel the scowls of the mothers with the all organic products in their carts.
We are counting down for the big first day of school for Sammy, February 21st. I’m already nervous and excited for him. His hearing teacher is giving a presentation to his class on Tuesday about hearing aids and she’s bringing a book and some sample hearing aids for them to play with. Then Sammy and I are going to meet her at the school and she’s going to ask the teacher to pick out a boy to help show us around the school. Diane is his hearing teacher and she’s been great. She’s the one who turned us on to our new audiologist. That’s all the news that’s fit to print today. More next week.
