Quick update from the hearing teacher. She stopped in to his class this morning to say hello and said he looked “happy as a clam” and was having a great time with the kids. Hurray! All my worries and he’s doing fine.
FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN!! (no, this is not a Neil post;-))
We dropped Sammy off at his first day of school today. It’s going to be a long day (for me probably more so than him). He was terrified and didn’t really want to go. I think part of him was excited too but right before we left for school he said he didn’t want to go and then he said it again when we walked up to the school. We left him in the classroom and the kids were being very friendly and trying to help him out. I know he’ll be ok but it was so so hard to leave him there. I want to put him in a little bubble and protect him from anyone hurting his feelings. I know every parent wants to do that with their children but I want so much to do it with Sam because of all he’s been through. I want to tell every kid in his class how funny and wonderful and brave he is. I know I can’t though, I have to let him be a normal kid and figure some things out for himself and I know he will, he’s a smart kid. I laughed as I left because I heard one little girl telling her friend, “You gotta talk right in his ear.” I guess the hearing aid presentation on Friday left her a little confused. He has a little buddy named Tanner that the teacher set him up with and he’s sitting right next to him. Tanner will help him out throughout the day. He’s a really cute little boy.
Sammy had his snack and his Power Ranger lunchbox and his Transformer backpack and he I had decorated his new pencil box with Ninja Turtle stickers. He wore his Power Ranger shirt and his Spidey letterman’s jacket (thank you Grandma Joan). He had just about every boy brand covered. I figure it might give him some good conversation starters anyway.
I know he’ll get through the day on adrenaline but he didn’t get to sleep very early last night. I actually out of the bath at 7:30 and in bed by 8:00 last night but Sammy couldn’t sleep. He was tossing and turning and he kept talking to me. He finally said “I think I’m not going to go to sleep tonight. I’m going to be up all night.” Then I would hear silence and he would say, “Boy it’s a long wait until morning. I think I see the light of the sun.” I said, Buddy, it’s only 9:30, I don’t think that’s the sun yet.” He told me, “I hope I don’t fall asleep in school after staying up all night. I hope I don’t fall asleep on my first day.” We finally got out of bed and I read him some chapters of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator to get his mind on something else. He fell asleep around 11pm. Eeks.
We lent our friends Ron and Meredith some of the kids’ winter coats for their upcoming ski trip and I have all the winter stuff in boxes downstairs. Boobots just came up in his snow hat, snow boots, and mittens and said, “Mom, I’m ready for the snow.” I hated to tell him it’s going to be a long wait in San Diego. I have to remember not to call him Boobots anymore – he says to me, “For the last time, my name is Andrew!”
Please think good thoughts for Sammy today on his big first day. We’re so proud of him and so thankful that’s he’s gotten here even if it’s a little late. I’ll post an update tomorrow to let everyone know how the first day went.
