June 9,2006

I’ve always thought of myself as a pacifist. It turns out that I’m quite bloodthirsty when it comes to five year-old karate tournaments. Sammy did great in his first tournament. He beat the first two guys and barely lost to the third boy who ended up in the finals. The third little boy he fought had a pretty harsh looking mom who was screaming instructions at him the whole time and I found myself screaming out “Side blade kick, Sam!” I looked around and thought, “Did that just come out of my mouth?” I had to remind myself to clap for every point even if it wasn’t Sammy’s. Neil was much better at clapping for all involved. It was a lot of fun and we so proud of Sammy, for his first tournament and he sure didn’t hesitate at all. I know I’m biased but he has great timing.

We went swimming with Ally and Andrew before the tournament and, as you can see from the pictures, the kids had a great time. Andrew has lost his fear of the water in the big pool and was jumping in and swimming to the stairs on his own. Sammy is big on doing crazy jumps and cannon balls these days.

Monday night this week Sammy came home from school and karate and had a fever with no other symptoms. He said he just wanted to go to bed and fell asleep around 7:30. We panicked of course because a fever with no other symptoms is never a good sign. I took him on Tuesday to the oncologist for blood work and a doctor’s check. The poor guy had to get poked three times because the nurse couldn’t get the vein and she kept moving the needle around. When we finally got another nurse to do it, he got it the first time. It sucked and I felt terrible for Sam. His blood work was fine and the onc. said it’s probably just a virus. Haven’t I heard that somewhere before? Anyway, it turns out there was a weird two day fever virus going around with no other symptoms and our pediatricians office said they’d seen a lot of patients with it this week. Sammy has been fine the last couple of days going to sports, school and karate. It’s tough to get out of the panic mode though. Neil and I keep asking each other if he looks pale or seems tired. He doesn’t though; he was full of energy yesterday.
Neil and I met with Dr. Patrick Quillen yesterday who wrote the book Beating Cancer with Nutrition. It was very interesting and informative. He gave us a list of supplements for Sammy and some nutrition advice that we’re going to start incorporating into our diet. We are going to become weird vitamin people but hey, anything that might give us an advantage… It may shock Andy’s system to have to eat something other than noodles ;-).
Andy finished school yesterday and his class had a little party at the beach. It was overcast and cold but Andy went in anyway and then all the other children wanted to go in of course. They jumped in the waves until their little lips were blue. Andy starts his summer school camp on June 22nd. Neil and I went to a cocktail party for Andy’s teachers last night and they said again how much they loved having him and what a funny, happy boy he is.
Sammy graduates from kindergarten on the 20th. I can’t believe the school year is over and I’m so proud of our little boy. After all he’s gone through he just jumped right in to kindergarten and caught up so quickly, not to mention had a blast. He is Star of the Week this week and is going to be honored at the school assembly on the 14th. Next week will be a big week for him. I’ll be sure to post pictures now that I’ve figured out how to do it. I might even figure out how to resize them so they aren’t so enormous ;-). Be sure to scroll sideways to see the karate pics.
