It was a beautiful night last night and we took the football up to the park. The boys had a great time as you can see.  We had the park to ourselves and it was just one of those unexpected times I wanted to soak up the moment - simple as it was.
We had our radiation consult this morning and Dr. Mundt thought we should just consider it the start of a discussion of whether or not we should radiate and if we do, if we do something different in terms of dosage or timing. The spot on the femur is the exact same spot we radiated in 2006 at relapse (exact same). He said it isn’t common for the spot to go away and then reappear in the exact same place. So, you have to assume that radiation plus chemo worked on most of the cells but there must of been some cancer cells that got away and here they are back again merrily reproducing.  Does it make sense to go back and re-radiate? Don’t know. He wants to talk to some radiation specialists at the COG meeting in mid-October and make a decision then, since we have been improving and it isn’t all that time sensitive that we start radiating if that is what we are going to do. So, if we do decide to do it, we probably need a new play, since the old play has been seen before (had to go with a football pun given the title of this post). Â
We have a blood check after school today and if the numbers stay in the right range, we may be happy to just think about radiation for the time being.
Andy and Sam are still really enjoying school, though Friday of last week Andy woke up and said, “I have school again?” Five full days is a long time for him. He’s made some new friends and Sarah is his favorite girl in class.  Charlie was bothering him yesterday and he said, “Charlie, your nerves are getting on me.” It was funny. Sam got back from radiation in time for snack recess. His writing and reading teacher from last year tested him on Friday and said he’s made leaps and bounds over the summer (vision therapy I think).  Yesterday Mrs. Abbuhl asked the kids to write about someone who was special to them and Sam wrote about Charlie. I haven’t seen it yet but his writing teacher told me about it this morning.  I’ll post it if I can get my hands on it.  He’s getting a group of buddies in his class and really likes Mrs. Abbuhl.Â
Sam’s team lost their first two soccer games. He’s been playing defense mostly and is a little intimidated by the bigger boys coming at him but he mixed it up a little more this last weekend. Andy’s team is running roughshod over the competition and Andy’s been scoring a lot. Now if we can teach him some humility…
Despite all the good news, we’ve been pretty stressed out and terrified lately. Last night I tried to make myself stop obsessing about everything and enjoy the beautiful night we were having.  I seem to be in a constant state of worry lately.  I hadn’t realized how little sleep I was getting until I slept through the night on Friday night. I woke up and it was still dark and I figured it was 1 or 2 in the morning (my usual) and I thought I’d call my brother in Australia and then I heard the sprinklers going and realized it was 6am. Wohoo.
Please think good thoughts and say some prayers for Hector Soto and his family. He doesn’t have a website but he is being treated for NB here in San Diego and is not doing well and in a lot of pain.
 More when I get the numbers.

Thinking of you guys so much. Your amazing Sam is a total growing machine and he looks great throwing the football…can we change him into a Cowboys fan?!@#@!#!@
Please take care of yourself and get some sleep. It is so hard with all the worries but still parents must practice what they preach. I am the worst offender but after finally taking the Ambien the Dr. forced on me last week I can truly see the light…

That picture of Sam running with the football is amazing…the look of pure joy on his face such a testament to living each moment to the fullest. It really brings such perspective to all the little nonsense that I allow to get me down. Your wonderful family is an inspiration and you are remembered often by your East coast cousins. Come visit any time and we’ll show the boys the joys of Tastycakes, cheesesteaks, subs, and blue crabs.
