I have some funny news and some bad news. Funny news first: Sam’s buddy Johnny was over a few weeks ago. Johnny lives a few miles away so we don’t see him as often as we would like. They were sitting on the couch playing Ninja Turtle videogames and Johnny paused, looked at Sam, and wondered “Sam, did you get a haircut?”
Now the bad news: in preparation for the stem cell transplant on 7/21 at City of Hope, we do a bunch of scans (MIBG, MRI, CT, bone scan, x-rays), bilateral bone marrow biopsy and aspiration, blood work, urinalysis, and renal functions. The scans indicated 2 new sites, the largest being 3cm long x 1cm deep, on Sam’s left shin. This means the disease has created new metastases while on chemo – not good news. Next step is to get a biopsy of the site and we will have that plan tomorrow and will let you know. Then we need to explore treatment options including phase 1 clinical trials.
We are heartbroken that we’ve come so far and now have to start tackling this anew but we have faith that our amazing little boy can beat this.
Thanks so much for all of the emails – please no phone calls as we don’t why to cry in front of Sam until we learn how to talk to him better.
With best wishes, Neil
