Sam starts round 5 of chemo today! This round is the same cocktail as round 3 – cisplatin and etoposide. It’s 4 days, 1 hour/day so we’re hoping to be done on Friday. For round 3, Sam did GREAT and we stayed out of the hospital for 2 weeks and gained some weight and just had fun. We’re hoping for more of the same.
Last night, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo, or more correctly, Dos de Mayo. Our friends moved the celebration up a few days so Sam would be able to come so much thanks to Deb/Colleen/Alan and Big Joe. If you’re not Californian, Cinco de Mayo rivals St. Patricks Day as a boozefest and it was great to have a few strawberry margaritas with friends.
We’re trying to sweet-talk our way into a private room this week. The last 2 rounds of chemo we’ve had to share rooms and it’s just easier when you can spread out and create your own mess. Plus there are always roommate issues, unbelievable as it may seem. Margot & I usually alternate spending the night with Sam and when I was planning on spending the night once, the mother of the boy sharing the room informed Margot that she didn’t think it appropriate to share a room with a man (me). I thought it was pretty funny as would most normal parents since the thought of having an affair with another mom in the midst of the oncology department was something I would think would air only on Desperate Housewives.
Wish Sam luck today! May round 5 be easy on his stomach and may his hearing be protected. After this round, we do a bunch of scans to get ready for surgery to remove the tumor which hopefully has shrunk tremendously.
