Cocktails anyone? Just injecting a bit of humor since Sam is enjoying his chemo cocktail at the moment. Cocktail is how the medical profession refers to multiple chemo agents being infused at the same time. The good news is that he’s almost done! He needs to have 4 days of carboplatin & etoposide plus 3 days of melphalan (all concurrently). He is currently on day 4 so his drinking days are almost done, officially ending at about 2:30pm tomorrow (Tuesday). After that, we begin to wait. The stem cells get re-infused on Friday and this takes about 15 minutes. Then we wait for them to engraft and start producing white blood cells.
How’s he doing? He’s doing well. He’s in a new hospital at City of Hope and it has Playstation 2 as standard fare. Coupled with the Gamecube, he’s pretty happy. He’s not lost a beat and still hammers me in Mario Double Dash Kart Racing but I’m not giving up and plan to return the favor to him soon 🙂 He’s also exploring some of the Harry Potter games and I like that since there’s a bit of reasoning to it. We have everyone up there (mom, dad, Andy & Sam) and Stephanie (Margot’s stepmom) is here and Sara (Margot’s mom) arrives Tuesday to help. We’re at a Marriott and Andy is doing a bunch of swimming. It’s really quite beautiful – we’re about a mile from Santa Anita Race Track which is where Seabiscuit was filmed and it’s right at the base of the Angeles Mountains.
So far, Sam has had very little nausea. We’re expecting a ton of nausea and mucositis but he’s doing great so far. We are trying to read a bit to him and making sure he continues his letters, numbers, and words. Other than that, we’re really just trying to stay as active as possible and make the days go quickly and have his mind occupied.
Please keep the emails coming and keep Sam in your prayers. Neil
